Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What does “life transitions” mean? Do only big transitions count?

“Life transitions” is an umbrella term that really includes anything you experience as a significant change in your life. Whether or not a transition is “big” is really determined by you. Even positive transitions (like buying a house) can leave us feeling lost or challenged. Here are some examples of life transitions:

  • Moving away to college
  • Ending a relationship (including a friendship)
  • Starting a new job
  • Retirement
  • Family changes
  • Becoming a parent
  • Sharing a part of your identity with community/coming out
  • Marriage
  • Questioning your faith and more
How can coaching help me navigate a life transition?

Working with a coach can help you identify your goals, build skills to work towards them, and have support and accountability along the way. Although a “coach” in sports terms is different than a Goal or Wellness Coach, there are some similarities in the ways our coaches give you the tools, help you reflect, and support you through practice.

After a brief discussion of your needs, strengths, and goals, you and your coach will work together to create a plan and start building skills. Skills you may build in coaching to help you navigate a transition include:

  • Assertive communication
  • Boundary setting
  • Self-reflection
  • Challenging negative self-talk
  • S.M.A.R.T. goal planning
  • Coping skills
  • Building a budget and more.

Do I need coaching or counseling to help me during my transition?

This really depends on the transition you are navigating and its impact on you. Even two people facing the same transition may choose differently between coaching and counseling. Others choose to do counseling and coaching one after the other or at the same time.

You can look at the chart below to understand some of the differences. The best way to determine which is best for you is to talk to someone who knows. You can complete our online pre-screen to schedule a complimentary call with a member of our team who can help you decide.

Coaching

  • Focus on growth

Counseling

  • Focus on recovery, healing, and new norms

  • Healing mental illness
