Getting started is as simple as completing our 5-minute

Intake Pre-screen where you will:

  • Briefly share with us why you're seeking services and your presenting concerns.

  • Complete a brief risk assessment to ensure you're not at risk for harm to yourself or others.

I understand my children have to grow up, why do I feel sad now that it's happened?

Change and transitions are hard, however they can also be confusing. On one hand, you want your children to grow and be independent, productive members of society; however on the other hand independence can cause worry and distance can feel disconnecting. It's normal for these type of changes to cause parents to grieve what once was in the family unit. Here are some common symptoms parents experience at this stage of life:

  • loneliness
  • emotional distress
  • a lack of purpose
  • fear of a lack of control
  • worry and anxiety
  • depression

Do certain types of parents experience empty nest syndrome?

Any parent can experience empty nest syndrome; however there are a few types of parents that can possibly be more susceptible than others. Those parents are:

  • helicopter parents that intervene quickly when their child(ren) experience any challenges
  • stay-at home parents
  • single parents
  • parents with relationship or marital problems
  • mothers

It's possible that none of these types of parents will experience any challenges with the empty nest times arises. It's most important to consider the parent's relationship with their child(ren) and the beliefs and concerns they hold about this next phase of life.

Is empty nest syndrome a clinical diagnosis?

Empty nest syndrome is not a clinical diagnosis. Empty nest refers to the saying that children "spread their wings" when they leave home to live independent, adult lives on their own. The syndrome was named after several decades of parents discovered to have similar experiences.
